Quick Answer

To convert amount to words in Indian Rupees, split the figure into Indian place values (Crore, Lakh, Thousand, Hundred, Tens/Units) and spell out each group, starting with "Rupees" and ending with "Only". For example, Rs 1,23,456.50 converts to "Rupees One Lakh Twenty Three Thousand Four Hundred Fifty Six and Fifty Paise Only" in English and "एक लाख तेईस हज़ार चार सौ छप्पन रुपये पचास पैसे मात्र" in Hindi. An amount in words converter automates this for cheques, invoices and receipts, where under Section 18 of the Negotiable Instruments Act 1881 the words prevail over the figures if the two ever differ.

Updated August 2026 · Based on the Indian Lakh and Crore place-value system, Section 18 of the Negotiable Instruments Act 1881, and current RBI cheque rules. For general information only, not legal or banking advice.

What is an Amount in Words Converter?

An amount in words converter is a free online tool that instantly turns a numeric figure into written words in Indian Rupees, in both English and Hindi. Instead of manually spelling out lakhs and crores, you type the number and this rupees in words converter produces cheque-ready text such as "Rupees One Lakh Fifty Thousand Only" or "एक लाख पचास हज़ार रुपये मात्र".

This is essential because Indian financial documents require the amount both in figures and in words. Whether you are filling a cheque, a GST invoice, a money receipt, or a rent receipt, a number to words converter india removes spelling errors and follows the correct Indian place-value grouping of Units, Tens, Hundreds, Thousands, Lakhs and Crores.

How to Convert Number to Words in Indian Rupees (Lakhs and Crores)

To convert amount to words in rupees, group the digits by the Indian place-value scale and spell each group from left to right, starting with "Rupees" and ending with "Only". Any paise (decimals) are stated separately after the word "and".

Example — Rs 5,43,210.50
English: Rupees Five Lakh Forty Three Thousand Two Hundred Ten and Fifty Paise Only
Hindi: पाँच लाख तिरालीस हज़ार दो सौ दस रुपये पचास पैसे मात्र

Notice the Indian comma placement: the first group from the right has three digits, then commas fall every two digits, so 1 crore is written as 1,00,00,000, not 10,000,000.

The Indian Place-Value System

Each Indian currency unit adds a fixed number of zeros. Understanding this scale makes it easy to spell any figure correctly.

UnitFigureZeros
Ten101
Hundred1002
Thousand1,0003
Lakh1,00,0005
Crore1,00,00,0007

Indian Numbering System vs International System

The International system groups all digits in threes and uses Thousand, Million and Billion. The Indian system uses Thousand, Lakh and Crore. The table below maps the two so you never confuse a million with a lakh.

IndianFigureInternational
One Lakh1,00,000Hundred Thousand
Ten Lakh10,00,000One Million
One Crore1,00,00,000Ten Million
Ten Crore10,00,00,000Hundred Million
Hundred Crore1,00,00,00,000One Billion

Rule of thumb: 1 Million = 10 Lakh, and 1 Billion = 100 Crore. For every Indian cheque, invoice or tender, always use Lakh and Crore, since that is what the bank or evaluating officer reads.

How to Write Paise and Decimals in Words

The two digits after the decimal point are paise. Write the rupees first, then "and", then the paise, and close with "Only". For example, Rs 1,250.75 becomes "Rupees One Thousand Two Hundred Fifty and Seventy Five Paise Only", or in Hindi "एक हज़ार दो सौ पचास रुपये पचहत्तर पैसे मात्र". If there are no paise, omit that part entirely and simply end with "Only".

Writing Amount in Words in Hindi (मात्र)

Under RBI Cheque Truncation System rules, cheques can be written in English, Hindi, or the regional language of the branch. Hindi is trickier than English because numbers 1 to 99 each have a unique single-word name rather than a tens-plus-units combination. For instance 21 is इक्कीस, 25 is पच्चीस, 45 is पैंतालीस and 99 is निन्यानवे. Our amount in words in hindi engine uses a precise 0 to 99 lookup so every Devanagari spelling is accurate, and appends मात्र (the Hindi equivalent of Only) to lock the amount.

Why Amount in Words and "Only" Matter Legally

Writing the amount in words prevents tampering. If someone tries to add a zero to the figure to turn Rs 10,000 into Rs 1,00,000, the unchanged words provide legal protection. This is codified in Section 18 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881: if the amount in figures and the amount in words differ, the amount stated in words is the amount to be paid. Courts have reaffirmed this repeatedly, though a genuinely inadvertent spelling slip does not automatically invalidate an otherwise clear cheque.

This is why the word "Only" (or मात्र) at the end is not decoration — it stops anyone from inserting extra words after your amount. The same logic applies on a Money Receipt, a Rent Receipt, and a GST Invoice.

RBI Cheque Rules 2026: Positive Pay, CTS-2010 and Faster Clearing

  • Positive Pay System (PPS): you pre-confirm the cheque number, date, payee and amount with your bank before it clears. PPS is mandatory for cheques of Rs 5 lakh and above, and from 07 January 2026 many banks lowered the savings-account threshold to Rs 2 lakh for cash and transfer modes. The amount you spell must match your PPS entry.
  • CTS-2010 standard: only Cheque Truncation System compliant cheques with the prescribed security features are accepted for clearing.
  • Faster clearing: under the RBI continuous clearing rollout, cheques now clear within a few hours instead of days, so keep funds ready and avoid casual post-dated cheques.
  • Repeat bounce action: banks can now act against habitual defaulters, including suspending cheque-book facilities. If a cheque bounces, see our Cheque Bounce Notice.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Words not matching figures — always cross-check both, because the words legally prevail.
  • Forgetting "Only" or मात्र, which leaves the amount open to alteration.
  • Mixing systems — writing "Million" on an Indian cheque instead of Lakh or Crore.
  • Wrong comma placement, such as 10,00,000 read as ten thousand instead of ten lakh.
  • Skipping paise when the figure has decimals, or writing paise when the amount is whole.

Where Amount in Words is Legally Required

Amount in words is required on cheques, demand drafts, promissory notes and bills of exchange, on GST tax invoices, on money and rent receipts, on tender and bid forms, and on sale agreements. In each case the words are the fallback of record if the figures are disputed, so use a reliable currency amount in words converter and verify before signing.
